Mount Edward by Bike
A small, BioGro-certified organic cellar door up Coalpit Road, pouring pinot noir, pet nats and a New Zealand-first vermouth — and its own view of visitors on bikes is “Bikers for sure”.

Getting There by Bike
The cellar door is about 480 metres off the Winery Bike Trail, up Coalpit Road — two minutes' riding, and the red dotted line on the map below is that stretch.
Their own arrival note: “There is parking onsite with our entrance to the left of the carpark.” The address is 34 Coalpit Road, and tapping it in The Details opens it in Maps.
The red dotted line is the distance from the Winery Bike Trail to the winery's front door. Tap the map and zoom out to see where you turn off.
The Wines
Everything is grown on their own five estate vineyards in Bannockburn and Pisa, certified organic by BioGro. In the winery: wild yeasts, no fining or filtration where they can avoid it, and sulphur under 50 ppm — some wines with none at all.

What to Expect
“Reservations guarantee you a table, walk ins welcome, Bikers for sure.” That is Mount Edward's own line, on their own reservation page, and no other cellar door in the valley says anything like it.
Tastings are bespoke rather than a fixed flight — you say what you want to try and they build it around that. $45 across current releases, $75 for the library tasting with older vintages and special editions, $110 for the wine and food matched experience. The first two are allotted 90 minutes and cap at six guests online.
Deciding mid-ride? Phone, do not tap. Their online booking needs six to eight hours' notice, which is why they ask same-day visitors and groups over six to call 03 442 6113 instead.
The kitchen does tapas-style small plates, deliberately small: in their words, portions are smaller by design so you can try a few things without committing to a full lunch. There are non-alcoholic options, and tasting options for anyone in the group not drinking.
Worth knowing
Their own channels disagree about closing time — the website says 5pm, Instagram says 4pm, Facebook says 4.30pm. All four agree on seven days a week from 11am. Ring ahead if this is your last stop of the day.
The Mount Edward Story
Founded in 1997, making one wine as a small family business, and still family-owned decades later. Their own heading for the arc: “From pioneer beginnings to certified organic”.
Curiosity is the house style. They pioneered vermouth in New Zealand and wine on tap, make orange wine and gamay alongside the pinot noir, and have an aged New Zealand brandy still to come. The motto is “Grow Your Own Way”.
All the fruit is their own, grown under BioGro certification across five estate vineyards — Muirkirk and Susan's at Bannockburn, Morrison and Pisa Terrace at Pisa. Their reasoning, in their words: “Organics is a no brainer for us, both philosophically and for the health of our vineyard.” Certification, they say, is what keeps them accountable.
Told from Mount Edward's own account of themselves.
Common Questions
- Do you need to book?
- Bookings are encouraged and walk-ins are welcome — their own words are “Reservations guarantee you a table, walk ins welcome, Bikers for sure.” Booking online needs six to eight hours' notice, so same-day visits and groups over six should phone 03 442 6113.
- How much is a tasting?
- From $45 per person across current releases, $75 for the library tasting, and $110 for the wine and food matched experience. Tastings are bespoke rather than a set flight.
- What time is it open?
- Seven days a week from 11am. Their own channels give three different closing times — the website says 5pm, Instagram 4pm and Facebook 4.30pm — so ring 03 442 6113 before planning a late stop.
- Is there food?
- Yes — tapas-style small plates from a small kitchen, available with a tasting, matched as a full experience, or on their own.
- Are the wines organic?
- Yes. Mount Edward grow all their own fruit under BioGro certification, across five estate vineyards, and farm them regeneratively.
- How far off the trail is it?
- About 480 metres up Coalpit Road, or two minutes' riding. There is parking on site and the entrance is to the left of the car park.
