Getting There by Bike

The cellar door isn't on the trail itself. It sits about 450 metres off it, and the red dotted line on the map below is that stretch.

There are two turns. You leave the Winery Bike Trail onto Gibbston Back Road and head south-west, which runs straight for roughly 400 metres, then a left turn takes you the last 30 metres in to the cellar door and its car park. About two minutes' riding.

At 450 metres it's one of the longer runs off the trail — most Gibbston cellar doors sit within 150 to 300 metres of it — so it's worth knowing where the turn-off falls rather than coming across it. Zoom the map out and you can see it against the stops either side.

The address is 47 Gibbston Back Road, and tapping it in The Details opens the cellar door's exact coordinates in Maps if you'd rather follow your phone.

The red dotted line is the distance from the Winery Bike Trail to the winery's front door. Tap the map and zoom out to see where you turn off.

The Wines

Everything poured at the cellar door is grown on the vineyard around you. You can taste the range on the day and have bottles sent home, or order any of them from the Mt Rosa shop.

What to Expect

Someone pours for you and talks you through what you're drinking. Every wine you taste is made from grapes grown on the vineyard you're sitting in — none of it is bought in from elsewhere.

The kitchen keeps it to bar snacks, small plates and platters: bruschetta, a baked brie, and boards that run from a cheese plate up to the Valley Platter. Enough to reset you for the rest of the trail without tipping into a full lunch. It's all on the food menu and drinks menu.

There's seating indoors and out. Outside you get one of the longest views in Gibbston, straight back down the valley you just rode.

Worth knowing

Save it for late in the day. Once you've done the big-name cellar doors and you're in no hurry, this place is at its best — and your shuttle back to Queenstown is close by.

The Mt Rosa Story

This was sheep country long before it was wine country. Mt Rosa was part of Kawarau Station, which ran over 40,000 sheep, and the vines now grow on land it once grazed. The first attempt at planting came in the 1970s and failed outright — the rabbits and sheep ate the lot.

Wool prices did the rest. By 2000 the family had decided a vineyard was the way forward, and the plantings that stand today went in. It still reads as farmland with vines on it rather than a manicured estate, which is much of the appeal.

The vineyard is SWNZ (Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand) accredited, and the approach in the rows is deliberately hands-off — the aim being wines that taste of this particular corner of Gibbston. Mt Rosa passed to new custodians, Sophie and her partner, in 2026.

Told from Mt Rosa's own history of the property.
