Arrowtown Day Trip
Gold Town + Wine Country in One Day

Start with Arrowtown's gold mining history and cute main street. Finish with a winery ride through the Kawarau Gorge. One perfect day from Queenstown.

The Best Day Trip from Queenstown

Arrowtown is 20 minutes from Queenstown and feels like a different world. A tiny gold rush village with heritage buildings lining a tree-shaded main street, backed by the dramatic peaks of the Crown Range. It's the kind of place where you pop in for an hour and end up staying all morning.

Most people visit Arrowtown and then drive back to Queenstown. That's fine. But there's a better way to spend the rest of the day. The Whizzy shuttle passes through Arrowtown on the way to the Gibbston Valley trailhead. Which means you can combine an Arrowtown morning with a winery ride afternoon. Two of the region's best experiences in a single day.

Arrowtown: What to See and Do

The Main Street

Buckingham Street is the heart of Arrowtown and it's about as charming as small-town New Zealand gets. Heritage stone and timber buildings house independent boutiques, galleries, and some excellent cafes. In autumn the street is lined with blazing gold and red trees. Even in summer it's photogenic from every angle.

Start at one end, wander to the other, duck into whatever catches your eye. The Arrowtown Bakery does exceptional pies and pastries. There are several good coffee spots. Budget at least an hour for browsing.

Chinese Settlement

During the 1860s gold rush, Chinese miners settled along the banks of the Arrow River. The restored Chinese Settlement is a cluster of original stone huts and rebuilt dwellings that tell their story. It's free to visit, well signposted, and only a short walk from the main street. A genuinely fascinating piece of New Zealand history that most visitors don't know about.

Arrow River

The Arrow River runs through town and it's beautiful in every season. Walk along the river trail, skip stones, or try your hand at gold panning. There's still gold in there -- tiny specks, but real gold. Several operators sell panning kits. Kids love it. Adults pretend they don't, then get competitive.

Cafes and Food

For a village of about 2,500 people, Arrowtown punches well above its weight on food. You'll find everything from proper bakery pies to elevated brunch spots. Eat here before the winery ride -- you'll want a solid base for the afternoon's tastings.

From Arrowtown to Wine Country

Here's where the day gets interesting. The Whizzy shuttle picks you up in Queenstown, drives through Arrowtown, and continues to the Gibbston Valley trailhead. The drive from Arrowtown to Gibbston is about 15 minutes through the Kawarau Gorge -- sheer rock walls, turquoise river, and the famous Kawarau Bridge (where bungy jumping was invented).

At the trailhead, you hop on your e-bike and ride back through the gorge on the dedicated cycling trail. The trail passes eight cellar doors in the Gibbston Valley wine sub-region. You stop at whichever ones interest you, taste world-class Pinot Noir, and ride on to the next.

The ride is almost entirely flat to gently downhill. The e-bike motor handles any inclines. You don't need to be fit. You barely need to pedal if you don't want to. The scenery does the work.

Your Perfect Day: Hour by Hour

Here's how to structure the ultimate Arrowtown + winery day trip from Queenstown.

  • 8:30 am -- Drive or bus to Arrowtown (20 min from Queenstown). Grab breakfast on Buckingham Street.
  • 9:00-10:30 am -- Explore Arrowtown. Main street shops, Chinese Settlement, Arrow River walk.
  • 10:30 am -- Meet the Whizzy shuttle. We pick you up and drive to the Gibbston trailhead.
  • 11:00 am -- Start riding. First wineries open at 10 am so they're ready for you.
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm -- Ride the trail, visit 3-5 wineries, have lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants.
  • 4:00-5:00 pm -- Finish the ride, drop the bike, head back to Queenstown.

Gold mining history in the morning. Pinot Noir in the afternoon. Mountains the entire time. That's a day.

The Kawarau Gorge: The Ride Itself

Even without the wineries, the ride through the Kawarau Gorge would be worth doing. The trail follows the river through a dramatic gorge carved from ancient schist rock. Towering bluffs on both sides, turquoise water below, mountains in every direction. The old Kawarau Bridge -- where AJ Hackett launched commercial bungy jumping in 1988 -- is visible from the trail.

It's the kind of scenery that makes you stop and take photos every few hundred metres. On an e-bike, you can do exactly that without worrying about maintaining momentum or getting tired.
