Things to Do in Queenstown
Beyond the Bungy

Queenstown is famous for adrenaline. But some of the best days here don't involve jumping off anything. Here's the full picture.

The Adrenaline Classics

Let's get the obvious ones out of the way. Queenstown invented commercial bungy jumping in 1988 and has been throwing people off things ever since. The Kawarau Bridge bungy (43 metres) is the original. The Nevis is the big one (134 metres). The Ledge above town is good for night jumps.

Jet boating on the Shotover River is a Queenstown rite of passage. Tight canyon walls, 360-degree spins, face full of spray. It lasts about 25 minutes and you'll remember it for years. Skydiving over the Remarkables gives you lake-and-mountain views that rival anywhere on the planet. Luging down Bob's Peak is cheaper thrills -- chairlift up, gravity-powered cart down, surprisingly addictive.

These are all brilliant. Do them. But if you've got more than two days in Queenstown (and you should), you need to fill the other days with something different.

On the Water

Lake Wakatipu is massive and gorgeous. The TSS Earnslaw -- a 1912 vintage steamship -- cruises to Walter Peak Station for a farm experience and afternoon tea. It's touristy but genuinely charming. Kayaking on the lake at sunset is more peaceful. Fishing charters run year-round for trout and salmon.

If you're prepared for a day trip, Milford Sound is about four hours each way but absolutely worth the drive. Towering fiords, waterfalls, dolphins, sometimes penguins. Most people do a cruise and drive back the same day.

In the Mountains

Queenstown sits at the foot of the Remarkables mountain range, and there's serious hiking on the doorstep. The Ben Lomond track is a full day up and back, with panoramic views from the summit. Queenstown Hill is a shorter option -- about 2-3 hours return -- with a rewarding lookout over the lake. In winter, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak ski fields are within 30 minutes of town.

For something gentler, the Skyline Gondola takes you up Bob's Peak for lake views, a restaurant, and stargazing sessions after dark.

Day Trips Worth the Drive

Arrowtown is 20 minutes away and feels like stepping back in time. A perfectly preserved gold mining village with a main street lined with heritage buildings, independent shops, and excellent cafes. Walk the Chinese Settlement, pan for gold in the Arrow River, eat a pie from a proper bakery. It's a half-day minimum.

Glenorchy, 45 minutes along the lake road, is where they filmed bits of Lord of the Rings. The drive alone is spectacular. From Glenorchy you can access the Routeburn Track, go horse trekking, or just soak in the silence.

Wine Country by E-Bike

Here's where we come in. Gibbston Valley -- Queenstown's wine sub-region -- sits 25 minutes east of town in the Kawarau River gorge. Eight cellar doors, world-class Pinot Noir, and a dedicated cycling trail connecting them all.

Done all the adrenaline stuff? Exhausted from hiking? This is the perfect counterbalance. An e-bike winery ride is active enough to feel like you're doing something, relaxed enough that you're sipping Pinot Noir by 11 am. The e-bike handles the hills. You handle the tasting notes.

Whizzy shuttles you to the Gibbston trailhead and you ride a gentle downhill gradient between the wineries. Visit three, four, five cellar doors at your own pace. No tour bus schedule. No designated driver needed. Just you, the trail, and some of New Zealand's best wine.

Why the Winery Ride Is Different

Most Queenstown activities last 15 minutes to an hour. Bungy is over in seconds. Jet boat is 25 minutes. Even skydiving is done in an hour including the briefing.

The winery ride is a full day out. Four to six hours of riding, tasting, eating, and taking in scenery that looks like a tourism poster. It fills a whole day and leaves you with stories (and bottles) to take home. At $129 per person with everything included, it's also one of the better-value activities in a town where $200+ experiences are the norm.

It works for couples, groups, families with older kids, hens parties, work outings -- anyone who can ride a bike. Which, thanks to the e-bike motor, is genuinely everyone.

Planning Your Queenstown Days

A solid three-day Queenstown itinerary might look like this:

  • Day 1: Arrive, get your bearings. Gondola, luge, dinner in town.
  • Day 2: Adrenaline day. Bungy, jet boat, skydive -- pick your poison.
  • Day 3: Winery ride by e-bike. Relaxed, scenic, delicious. The perfect wind-down before you leave.

Staying longer? Add Milford Sound, Arrowtown, a hike, and a rest day. Queenstown rewards extra time.
