Why This Is the Best Hens Day in Queenstown
You're organising a hens party in Queenstown. You've already looked at spa days, cooking classes, and cocktail making workshops. They're fine. But none of them give you a full day out in the mountains with wine, laughter, sunshine, and photos that'll make everyone back home jealous.
The Whizzy winery ride does exactly that. Your group gets shuttled to the Gibbston Valley trailhead, hops on e-bikes, and spends the day cycling between cellar doors at your own pace. The e-bike motor means nobody gets left behind. The wineries provide the Pinot Noir. You provide the matching outfits and the embarrassing speeches.
How It Works for Groups
We run hens groups regularly and we've got it dialled. Here's the process.
- Book online. One person books for the whole group. Pick your date and number of riders.
- Meet us in Queenstown. We confirm the meeting point when you book. Morning departure recommended -- gives you the most winery time.
- Shuttle up together. We load everyone and the bikes into the van and drive to the Gibbston trailhead. About 30 minutes of scenic views and pre-ride excitement.
- Ride and taste. You ride the trail together, stop at wineries, take photos, taste wine, eat lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants. Totally self-paced.
- Drop the bikes. Ride to the end of the trail and leave the bikes. We collect them. You head into town for the evening.
Group Size? Not a Problem
We've run hens groups from 4 people to 20+. There's no upper limit as long as we have enough notice to prepare the bikes. Bigger groups just mean more shuttles, and we sort all of that.
The beauty of e-bikes on a trail is that your group naturally spreads out and regroups. Fast riders go ahead, slower riders cruise at their own pace, and everyone meets up at the next winery. Nobody feels rushed. Nobody feels left behind. The trail does the group management for you.
No Fitness Required. None.
This is the number one thing hens organisers worry about. Will everyone be able to do it? What about Aunty Carol who hasn't been on a bike since the 90s?
Aunty Carol will be fine. The e-bike has a motor that kicks in when you pedal. It feels like having a permanent tailwind. The trail is flat to gently downhill. We've had riders in their 70s complete the full route without breaking a sweat. If you can sit on a bike and turn the pedals, you can do this ride.
The only requirement is that you can ride a bike at all. If someone genuinely can't, they're welcome to join the shuttle to the wineries and meet the group there instead.
The Winery Stops
The trail passes eight cellar doors. You won't visit them all (and shouldn't try), but here are the highlights for hens groups:
- Kinross -- Five wine labels under one roof, amazing terrace, great platters. Perfect for a long group lunch.
- Peregrine -- Stunning architecture, organic wines, incredible photo spot.
- Gibbston Valley Winery -- Wine cave tour, restaurant, cheesery. The full experience.
- Gibbston Tavern (Rockburn) -- Pub atmosphere, hearty food, craft beer for the non-wine drinkers.
Most hens groups visit three or four wineries and spend 4-5 hours on the trail. That gives you plenty of time for tastings, food, and all the photos you need.

The Perfect Hens Weekend Schedule
Planning the full Queenstown hens weekend? Here's how the winery ride fits in.
- Friday: Arrive, settle in, dinner and drinks in town.
- Saturday morning: Winery ride. This is the main event. Start early, taste wine all day, collect bottles.
- Saturday night: Big night out in Queenstown. You've earned it.
- Sunday: Recovery. Brunch. Maybe the Skyline Gondola if anyone can face it.
The winery ride fills the Saturday perfectly. Active enough to feel like an experience, relaxed enough that everyone still has energy for the evening.
Photo Opportunities
Between the mountain backdrop, vineyard rows, cellar door gardens, and the general hilarity of a hens group on e-bikes, you'll have more content than you know what to do with. Peregrine's falcon-wing building is the most Instagrammed spot. Kinross terrace with the mountain views is another winner. And there's something about a line of matching outfits on e-bikes that just works for the 'gram.
